I was born and raised in Great Falls. In June of 1978 I graduated from Western Montana College with a BS Degree in education and I started teaching at Holy Family School in Great Falls that fall.
I began my Law Enforcement career as a Deputy Sheriff on June 1, 1979 for the Cascade County Sheriff's Office. In 1981 I went to Polygraph school at Spokane Community College and graduated to become a certified examiner at the same time receiving 31 post graduate credits toward my Master's degree.
From 1979 to 1997 I was on patrol earning various positions within the rank and file such as: Patrol deputy, interviewer, interrogator, Arson investigator, negotiator, Sex crimes investigator, Detective, Coroner, and was awarded the Lifesaving award from the Montana Sheriff's and Peace Officer's Association and graduated from the FBI Command College, I obtained the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant.
In 1998 when the new 360 bed Detention Facility was finished being built, I was asked to run the facility by Sheriff Strandell. I accepted and proceeded to hire 40 detention officers to add to the original 10. I was promoted to the rank of Captain and then began to run a Multi-Million dollar division of the Sheriff's Office. I was promoted to the rank of Chief Captain and continued to oversee the Detention facility moving the operation forward going from the original 50 detention officers to what I oversee today which is 87 detention officers and 6 support staff and 450 inmates. I also became the Commander of the entire Sheriff's Office. I negotiate, prepare Bids/RFP's (request for proposals), Union contracts, Labor Management committee and oversee all the contracts that are critical to the operation of the Detention Facility such as - Department of Corrections/Montana State Prison Inmate contract, Federal Marshals inmate contract, Immigration Customs Enforcement Inmate contract, Department of Justice Inmate contract, Trinity Foodservice inmate food provider, Planned Parenthood Inmate medical provider, Securest technology inmate telephone provider, Montana Correctional Enterprises Inmate commissary provider and the Vision Net contract.
For the last 20 years I have been in control and I directly prepare and manage the budget for the Detention Facility which is comprised of about 9 million dollars.
